Marc Witkes Memorial Scholarship

The Marc Witkes Memorial Scholarship fund was a passion of its founder, Marc Witkes. As president of Durango Motorless Transit (now the Durango Running Club), Marc’s vision was for local athletes to remain in the Four Corners region to pursue their dream of competing in collegiate cross-country at Fort Lewis College. Marc was the driving force behind this scholarship and helped it become a reality.

Formerly known as the DMT/FLC Scholarship, it was renamed in memory of Marc Witkes who unexpectedly collapsed in the last mile of the 2006 Tucson Marathon. Marc had a profound impact upon the people he came in contact with, always encouraging them to chase after their dreams with all they have.

This memorial scholarship is awarded every semester to athletes of the Fort Lewis College Men’s & Women’s Cross Country teams to assist those whose dream it is to compete at the collegiate level in a sport that has truly become a part of who they are, and who they wish to become.
